DEATH Otf CHARLOTTE COLLINS.
The long enquiry intd the death of Mrs. Charlotte Collins terminated on the 14th ultimo m the following :— "That death had been caused by criminal abortion, but there was no evidence to show by whom it had been caused, and that the conduct of Dn Crooke had been ( somewhat suspicious throughout the case.' " "It is for- the law officers of the Crown to consider the full effect of the depositions taken regarding the death of Charlotte .Collins. The disclosures may have to be be viewed also from another stand-point. Mr. Crooke figures as the special patron of the house kept by Mrs. Evans. He speaks m the highest terms of the establishment and its conductor. Illegitimate children are freely born there. Illegitimate children almost as freely die, and m each instance the certificate forthcoming is generally that 'bf-^Mr. Crooke. Presumedly, some one must take these cases, but Mr. Crooke is not simply a private practitioner. He occupies official positions. And we venture to submit that the man who dabbles m a practice of this class is not a fitting representative of the medical profession m Victoria."
