A DAY AFTER THE FAIR.

[To tho Editor of the Kvkning Herald.]

Sir, — Those who perused the leading article of the Standard o£ yesterday, will wonder why such a leader should appear now. If tho Editor of that paper had given expression to such ideas when they could ha\c affected the matter, i. c. , when Mr. Hurrey'o notice of motion was given ; or, when the same was discussed ; or even lately, when Mr. Locke's notice of motion to vote salaries was laid before the Council, one could have understood it.

But noio, that the entire matter is cold, and has been (rightly or wrongly) settled, and past all discussion, there appears no adequate notive to produce the article m question.

The Standard having neglected to direct . public attention to the matter while it was proceeding, can do no possible good by its present remarks. If the subject was worth an article at aU tj then it should have appeared while it might have produced some effect. If, on the other hand, it was not worth bringing before the public tlien, still less can it be now.

The Staivdard seems to have been perfectly reticent, when it should have been outspoken. The whole matter has been canvassed and settled without any; assistance or intervention from it, although on this, as on many other occasions, the Editor having seen how the cat jumps, is excessively wise after the fact. The whole question of salaries was finally settled on the 21st of February, but it is not until the 13th of March, that he considers it necessary to take any notice of the matter. I am, &c. , One of the Public.
