MAKARAKA CONCERT.
To the Editor of the Evening Herald Sir, — I was told that an issue of the Standard contained an account of the late attempted concert at Makaraka, and having heard that the above paper was becoming quite respectable, I procured a copy. Now, a great deal of blame is due to the Committee of the Matawhero school for the want of proper arrangements, and, I, as Chairman was prepared to accept the greater part of it, but what was my astonishment to find that m the paper before me there was no complaint about people being brought by public notice to an entertainment that never came off, or of others coming from town to sing and finding no piano to accompany them. The writer had the impertinence to object to the words and manner with which 1 informed those present of our failure. Of course the account is as untrue as it could be made. I know that I spoke without hesitation, but I must confess to the want of those flowers of rhetoric which strewed along the path of my speech might have rendered it more acceptable to the Editor of the Standard, who, I am informed was present. His style is somewhat different — The advantage of my method, however, is that I get to my point sometimes, and generally render myself intelligible, and not very wearisome. You see I try to stick to Webster, whereas his dictionary is Webb's — very much unabridged. But seriously sir, is it not atrocious that one who devotes his time and abilities (such as they may be) to a go»d cause, such as that of promoting the education of the children of his neighbours, cannot do so without subjecting himself to the insolence of a pestilent fellow like this. It is true that I have had occasion more than once to rate him somewhat severely, and it is possibly his nature to be spiteful, but surely the time for venting his spleen was very ill chosen. — Yours, &c J. B. POYNTER.
