AUCKLAND.

This Day. Dr. Wallis, M.H.R., intends to call a meeting of his constituents in City West, next week, to explain his views on the Education question. The hon. member wholly repudiates beingdenominationlist in education, but claims it was mainly owing to his exertions that the Government passed through the present act.

At the declaration of the poll for City West to-day, Mr. D. Goldie was elected member. He said he had no fear for the cause of undenominational education as long as we have united Press on our side. Working men, he said, were also deserving of thanks for the manner in which they worked, many of them not only coming at some inconvenience to vote, but also attending committee meetings, and doing their best to influence the votes and their fellows. One thing has been proved by the election, that the Catholic people were not with leaders on the subject. That was clearly proved by the acknowledged difficulty in bringing them to poll.

At the native meeting to-day, a resolution was carried that subscriptions be not raised for the Waka Maori, because it is not a Government paper ; also, that the meeting should wait till next week for Tawhaia's notice to attend the Kopua meeting, and if not received then, the natives should return to their own settlements.

A dispute between Ngapukis and Thames natives, respecting the stealing of a native woman, was referred to by Sheehan. The meeting then closed. A ball will be given on Monday. Mr. Whitaker, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at Cambridge yesterday. At the conclusion of his speech he received a vote of confidence.
