LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The non-arrival of the Rotorua, as expected to-day, will prevent the Georgia Minstrels appearing at tiie Masonic Hall j this evening, as announced in our last evening's issue. The Hotorua brings on the ' full Company, who will give their inimitable entertainment to-morrow (Thursday) evening. The heads of the programme appear in our advertising columns, but it does not convey anything like a full impression as to what will be presented during a series of talented performances extending over three hours. Mr. JR. D. DeLias, who brings on this talented company, is a sufficient guarantee that the public will have their fullest expectations realised, and that the full programme will be carried out in its entirety. Mr. Alfred Carter, so long connected with the Customs in Gisborue, has been promoted to Wellington, for which place he will leave in a few days. We know that our opinion will be fully endorsed by all men who have had to do business with Mr. Carter at the Custom House, when we say that a more obliging gentleman there has never been in any Government department. Mr. Carter is greatly respected by all to whom he is known. Of a retiring disposition, of studious habits, with a love for genuine literature, Mr. Carter has never thrust himself into public notice ; but we know him to be a man of a kindly heart, and one who has done many good acts of which his right hand has not let it be known to his left, His absence will bo regretted, however efficiently his post may be filled by another. It is a matter for regret that it should be so, but the whole of the walls of the new building of the Bank of New Zealand will have to be taken down as low as the f juiidations. The building was covered by a builder's risk for £1,000, but this amount will not nearly meet the loss sustained. ■ In a notice last evening in which we stated the committee of the Gisborne Club had engaged suitable rooms at the Masonic Hotel, we, en passant, mentioned it was probable that arrangements would be made for the Club to be held permanently at the Masonic. We wrote from mere outside report, and did not speak as having authority. The brigantine Omaha, which arrived at Lyttelton, on Saturday last, from the Chatham Islands brought 15,000 smoked eels and 22 casks of albatrosses for the great native meeting at Waitara next month. We learn by the last Gazette that Harry Kenrick, Esq., R.M. of Gisborne, has been appointed Resident Magistrate for ! the District of Wairoa, with jurisdiction to £50. When the Taupo was leaving the Wellington wharf recently half a dozen youngsters assembled with tin whistles and played " The Rogue's March." Detective Farrell was a passenger en route for Auckland. Flattering to Detective Farrell ! It was at first expected (says the N. Z. Herald) that His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson would land at Auckland, and that therefore our citizens would have the first opportunity of bidding him welcome. This, however, will not bo the case, as the new Governor is to leave Sydney on the 15th of March in a man-of-war for Wellington direct. The ceremony of swearing-in will take place immediately after His Excellency's arrival. It is expected that he will pay a visit to Auckland after a few weeks' residence in Wellington, but till some- \ thing definite is known as to the time of ' his coming here no preparations can be made to give him a suitable reception.
