AUCKLAND.
This Day. The Sapphire sailed this morning for Portsmouth. Myas, the deserter, who was on board as a prisoner, made a bold attempt at escape before the departure of the vessel. He had broken loose, and was on deck, when he was caught and put under restraint. The German man-of-war Ariadne, leaves on Saturday for Apia, Samoa. The test question at the City West election will be religious or secular education. At the sale of Crown Lands, held today, the number present was few, and the sales equally few. The Land Tax frightens away all speculation. At the opening of the Maori Parliament to-day at Orakei, there was a lnrge attendance of Europeans and natives. Over 350 Moaris were present, including representatives of all the tribes. The Chief Paul, who presided, delivered an address. A long telegram was read from Sir George Grey and Mr. j Sheehan.
