Defeat of the Zulus.

LONDON. February 20. A British column was attacked by 40,000 Zulus. The British gained a comple victory with only trifling loss. The first reinforcement has left England. The latest Cape news is to the effect that a force, under Colonel Peirson, is safely established at Edope. There are now no hostile Zulus in the colonv at Natal. A Home Rule candidate has been elected by a majority for Cork in room of a deceased member. Lord Napier of Magdaia, who had been summoned home from Gibraltar, arrived in London to-day. Sir Charles Dilke has given notice in the House of Commons of a resolution condemning the Zulu war. Lord Napier of Magdala, who has been recalled from Gibraltar, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief against the Zulus. The new German tariff allows of free importation of woo!, tools, and copper. The Emperor of Germany refused his consent to arrest the Socialist deputies. A serious riot has occurred at Cairo. The mob has insulted the Khedive, and " missiled" the Mirusters.

Sir Alexander Malet has been appointed Ambassador for Constantinople. Anarchy reigns in Thessaly. The military and police are in conflict. Elliott defeated Higgins, the London sculler, for the Tyne Champion Cup, easily. The opening wool sales were largely attended by home and foreign buyers. 25,000 bales were offered, Cape wool preponderating. The prices were similar to those prevailing at the close of the last series, but inferior fleeces are lower. New Zealand loan 6 per cent., are higher.
