We, this afternoon, devote considerable space in giving fullest details of the wreck of the Taupo, for which we have to acknowledge ourselves indebted to the columns of the Bay of Plenty Times. The official inquiry must be held before we are allowed to express an opinion as to who may have been in fault, supposing a fault to have been committed. The editor of the Bay of Plenty Times apologises to us for not having replied to our telegram, asking for fullest information. No apology is needed.

A newspaper does not get a wreck every day for sensation matter. We have no doubt that editor and reporter both had their work cut out for them, as may be seen by the full and careful report it furnishes in every matter connected with the wreck. If the Bay of Plenty Times will not object receiving a compliment at our hands, we shall mention, that in our opinion, that journal is now among the best written and edited of the many smaller papers issued throughout the less important centres of the Colony ; and helps to confirm an opinion founded upon long observation that the best newspaper talent of New Zealand is to be found in the smaller journals. For washy articles, for absence of independant thought, and for shift of wind from one quarter to its opposite, commend us to some of the larger journals.
