A SULPHUROUS BUSINESS.
Auckland gossip during the last few days (says the Star) lias been monopolised by a recent sale of chemical works and island. The purchasers who comprise some of the keenest men of business in the city, are, it appears, exceedingly dissatisfied with their bargain, indeed they allege that it is anything but what had been represented, and on the faith of which they bought. Two cutters sent to the island, instead of findinginexhaustible stores of sulphur, with difficulty loaded in five weeks, leaving a poor prospect for the return cargo. The indignant purchasers, who, it should be mentioned, had taken every precaution which business men could take to satisfy themselves of the value of the property, now; consulted on the situation. All sorts of proposals were advocated, but it was ultimately dotermined to offer the property back to the original owners for £2,500, just half the money paid for it a few weeks ago. This proposition was submitted this afternoon — with what result has nob yet transpired — but no doubt the vendors who held their property in such high estimation will gladly avail themselves of the chance of repossessing it on such favourable terms.
