Explosion m a Coal Mine.

40 Men Buried.

DUNEDIN.

This Day. A dreadful explosion has occurred at the Kaitangata coal mine this morning. One boy was killed, and forty men are inside. The result is unknown. A woollen factory will shortly be established m Kaikoura Valley, close to Dunedin, by Ross and Glendinning. The machinery is on its way out, and building operations will be begun at once. Two five-roomed houses m Howestreet were burnt down this evening. The cause was the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. The Governor arrived yesterday, and received several addresses. In reply to one His Excellency spoke on the question of an elective Governor, and stated this cry was only a pretext for the separation of the Colony from England. He said the Imperial Parliament would not recognise a Colony who would not receive a representative of Her Majeßty. He thanked the colonists for their loyalty to the mother country, and he felt gratified to know that on leaving the Colony he had obtained the respect of the citizens. His Excellency was also presented with an address atlnvercargill, his reply being mainly to the same effect as at Dunedin. The Times, Herald, and Star, have articles, strongly disapproving of the conduct of Ministers to the Marquis of Normanby, and approving of the remarks made by the Marquis on elective Governors. The Age alone contends that an elective Governor does, not imply severance from the mother country.
