DAN KELLY'S SHOT.

"Dan Kelly has got shot!" The news spread like wildfire thoughout a leading hotel on Monday, having been brought to Ballarat (the Star says) by a gentleman arriving by the afternoon train from Castlemaine. "That's good ne'vs," said one open mouthed listener. "Whereabouts 1" enquired half a dozen others. " All over his body," came the satisfactory reply. " Ah, now ; didn't I tell you so 1" exclaimed a little sandyhaired man ; " I knew they'd shoot him before the week was out." " What about the inefficiency of the force now?" asked the smiling policeman off duty, and refreshing in plain clothes. " Yez can't bate the foorce," added the constable in triumphaant tones. • 'Great work, by Jove I I'll shout all round; here, waiter, take the orders ;" and the man with the sandy locks Bpun a sovereign on the table in high glee. In came the liquor, up went the glasses, and somebody else ordered in cigarß. "And now," said Sandy, puffing away at at a full-flavoured Cabana, "now, mister, tell us about it. Dan's dead of course?" "Not to my knowledge," replied the traveller. "Eh ! what, not dead, did you say?" "Certainly not ; who said he was dead ? I merely stated that Dan Kelly's got shot, and you may take your oath he's got powder too, and intends to use both freely before he is taken. Gentlemen, the compliments of the season to you.'. The metting then closed' the customary vote, to the chair having been omitted, and the inexpressibly gratified waiter being capsized in the passage by the wrathful little gentleman boasting of the sandy locks.
