Auckland, This day, The Star thinks Rewi's attempt to reestablish Aukati at Taiipi is intended to reinstate his mana, preparatory to a meeting of tribes to consider programme. The movements of parties in anticipation of the coming City West election, point to a probable block voting on both sides. Rumor is current here that Sir George Grey comes to Auckland to assist the cause of Mr. Dignan jun., who is a Catholic candidate. The City of Sydney took 250 tons of Bay of Islands coal. The captain expressed his satisfaction with the despatch he received, and said mail steamers would probably soon become considerable consumers of Bay coal. Sir Robert Douglas has addressed the electors, and received a vote of thanks.

Napier, This Day. The result of the Harbour Board election was as follows : — Stuart, 381 ; Robiohns, 334 ; Smith, 328 ; Williams, 317; Sutton, 118 j Kennedy, 171. A good deal of interest was manifested in the eleotion, and the result was a general surprise. The inquest on the Konini Hotel fire concluded last night. The jury returned a verdict that the Konini Hotel was destroyed by fire under suspicious circumstances, but there is not sufficient evidence to show how it originated. The Stewart family finished a successful season here last evening, and leave for Gisborne to-day by the Taupo.

Hokitika, This Day. A fresh discovery of gold is reported at Back Creek, three miles above Woodstock in the Kanieri district. Payable wash, was met with on Saturday.

Nelson, This Day. The poll was officially declared on Saturday. Adams, returning thanks, attributed his majority to the unswerving advocacy of secular education, and Pitt's defeat to the introduction of the religious element into the contest.

Timaru, This Day. At the Waimate Police Court last week Sarah Steel and Robert Lee were committed for trial for forging and uttering cheques in the name of the female prisoner's husband. Similar charges are hanging over the same prisoners for offences committed at Christchurch.
