Melbourne, Jamiary 30. A prospectus of a Butcher's Company has been issued, with a Capital of £20,000. Mr. John Thomas Smith, who once kept a low-class public m Melbourne, and who afterwards was a Minister of i,he Crown, and was seven times elected Mayor of Melbourne, is dead. The weather is desperately hot, and tires raging m the* country. Preparations are making for the reception of Lord Normanby. Sir Bryan O'Loghlan will meet the Ringarooma at the heads.
Sydney, January 30. Very heavy gold has been struck on the Scrubby plains. The Chinese Bill empowers the Government to levy £10 on every Chinese landing m the Colony. In event of the non payment the Captain of the vessel will be liable to a fine of £20 for each Chinaman and a forfeitures of his vessel. The Legislative Council has introduced a clause m the Parliamentary Privileges Bill defining contempt as being acts, words or writings, m or within the precincts of the Chamber. The report that Governor Robinson has received his commission is incorrect. His date of departure for New Zealand is indefinite.
