Joe Leonard then makes play after a very severe tussel winning easily. 2. Ladies' Purse of 40 boys., three miles, welter weights for age ; gentlemen riders only ; half entrances added. G. Burnand's br g Skysail 1 D. Page's br g Day and Martin 2 W. Black's eh m Queen of Hearts ... 3 Queen of Hearts made the running, Skysail making very fair play, Day and Martin being a good way behind. At two miles Skysail took up the running, and beat the mare. Day and Martin began to make play, but was too far out, and Skysail won by about six lengths, Day and Martin racing hard with the mare for second place. 3. County Stakes of 20 soys., for all horses bred m the County of Cook, weight for age, ; winner of Maiden Plate to carry Ylbs extra ; distance, one mile. G. Burnand's gg Shoefly, 1 W. Cooper's re Zacco, 2 A. Paraons's blk g Lizard, 3 Shoefly made the running from first to last, and won easily. 4. Tradesmen's Handicap of 60 soys. ; nomination of three soys. on the 21st December, 1878, and acceptance of four soys. on the 25th January, 1879, night of general entry ; weightsto be declared on the 6th of January, 1879 ; top weight not to exceed lOst., distance one and a half miles. Acceptances added to stakes. Mr. Prince's Pinfire ... 1 Mr. D. Page's Merlin ... 2 Mr. W. Black's Songster 3 Very fine race. Pinfire made the running from end to end. West End ran off the course. Songster ran up and got third place. Merlin's running surprised everybody.
