IN RE THE MURDERER OF MCELLER.

Auckland, This Day. At the Supreme Court, an application was made for a writ of habeas corpus on behalf of Thomas Rennells, charged with the murder of Captain Moeller, at Bautaritari. After argument Justice Gillies ruled there was no power under the Foreign Offenders Act of 1863 to issue such a warrant as that under which Rennells was detained, and ordered a writ to be issued commanding the gaoler to bring the body of the prisoner into Court. Wellington, This Day. Great changes are made m the Land Transfer Department. It is now transferred from the Ministerial Department of Justice to that of Stamps, and the officers have to communicate through the under Secretary of Stamps. Each branch is required to send m immediately returns of arrears of work as far as possible. The offices of Registrar Examiner, and Deputy Registrar of Stamps, will be amalgamated. Mr. Stout addressed his constituents last evening. There was a large attendance with the Mayor m the chair, Mi. Stout addressed the meeting at some length. He first touched on the Apanui Railway and defended the action of the Ministry. He then alluded to local subjects and came to matters affecting the Legislative Council. He said the only remedy for the present state of things was to declare that the tenure of office of members of Council should only be seven or ten years and not for life. In his opinion the time had come when we should begin to think of electing our own Governor. Mr. Stout receiyed votes of thanks and confidence.
