CANADIAN JOULARITY.
?he thrivhg town Ottawa, would hare delighted the , art of Charles Kiftgsley by fa worn o f muscularity ■ and its hisi anirr spirits. Possessed of the® attnb'p, you ma y 0 %J. ftlm^^anvthbg vwj at Ottawa. For instance, a slort timft ago a number of "young mea " — as I a local journal tenderly styba them t— having no other amusement on hanld, thought they would have a littte/ fun with an old linkman naned f'Moses Hegan. To begin with tiey g( >t up a dramatic rev presentation of tin ■ siege of Plevna, old' Moses being the f< >rtresß, themselves the betriegors, ard lun ips of mud the cannon balls. fVfter a brief bombardment, the Ottawa Plevna, unlike its prototype, fell to the ground, and the gallant assailants determined to burn the place. With ttis end m view they inserted a? lighted torch under: the linktnan'a coat tails, aril inn short time he flared up beatrtMSly. But Moaes was not altogether incremated after all, being eventfj^y extinguished by a rough rolling m a mud pool. Leaving him m this plight, the jokers went their way rejoicing, and the old man had to reach home as best he might, without the assistance of eyes. One of these had been destroyed, we are told, on a previous occasion by I "skylarking," and the bombardment had effectually blinded the other. The comments of » local paper on the affair are delicious. "This repreheneible conduct on the part of young men who [ ought to know better will justify the interference of the police should it be repeated." We should have thought their interference sufficiently justified by what had already taken place. To pelt an old man with mud, as a pre* liminary to making an cettfo defe of him certainly seems a remarkable proceeding to happen m the streets of a town that considers itself civilised. Young men will be young men, we know, but the young men of Ottawa would appear to occasionally metamorphose themselves into unmitigated ruffians. We fervently hope that police of that unpleasantly jocular town will not wait for a repetition of the outrage before taking action. They should remember that poor Moses Hegan has no more eyes to lose.
