Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, at Gloucester, stales ih.it the reports of t<ie great distress prevailing, has been greatly exaggerated. * It was the intention of the Government to maintain peace. Lord Derby, speaking at Rochdale, also said reports were exaggerated. He admitted that there was a great deal of severe distress, owing to the depressed state iv so many important branches of trade ; but he hoped the present state of things was only temporary.
