WHY I DO NOT ATTEND FUNERALS.
To the Editor of the Evening Herald. Sir, — I have as much reverence for the dead as other people, but I do not attend funerals m Gisborne for the reason that I have, m the interests of my family to take oare that I am not m my turn carried to the cemetery, through cold oaught m drenching rain, or an attack of brain fever* by sunstroke, as has been the case with more than one of my fellow townsmen. Is it not possible, and would it not be more convenient that the funeral service be read m the Chapel or Church, of the denomination to, which the de*
ceased m his life belonged ? This done, let the coffin, followed by the relatives of the deceased, be conveyed direct to the burial ground and there interred. 1 see no necessity why clergymen or mourners, should spend half a day on walking or driving between three or four miles to the cemetery, compelled to take the weather just as it may come — broiling hot, pouring wet, or as it may be. I am an advocate for all proper and decent observances, but not when it may jeopardise health, and perhaps life itself. — I am &c, Precaution.
