The question of school prizes is being warmly discussion m some of the Southern journals. It is a vexed question; but we should certainly like to s(.e the system abolished. If some chi. dren get prizes, and others do not, those who do not are disappointed, and' parents are often vexed and angry. If all children get "prizes," they' a.c not prizes, but presents. Children would doubtless vote for the continuance of a system which gives a large proportion of them a new book at least once a year. But the question is whether the system does any good, if it does not do any positive harm. If prizes become so common, may it not become at last a mark of " good form " among clever boys to decline them. " I get a prize ! do you take me for one of those little asses that always get a prize . no, indeed ; I'd be ashamed of such a thing." * When honours become too bemmon, familiarity breeds contempt.
