We have to acknowledge our indebtness to Mr. Johnson, Collector of Customs, Port of Poverty Bay, for some very valuable information and as pleasing as it is valuable. .£3086. These increases are something extraordinary ; but not more so than the extension of our shipping trade. In 1877 the number of vessels entering om- port was 245, aggregating 28,500 tons. In 1878 the number of vessels entering was 331, aggregating over 58,000 tons, or an increase of nearly thirty thousand tons ! The exports for 1878, consisted of — Wool, value £51,106 • Tallow £698 Apparel £20 Total £51,824 It is also to be borne m mind that our imports and exports do not take m what is sent away or received coastwise or inter-provincially.
