THE NEW YEAR

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR TO THE BURGESSES OF PATEA The old year lias passed away and the New Year lies before us. I.would like to Lake the opportunity of wishing ,ou one and all on behalf of the Mayoress and myself a most happy and prosperous New Year. ' I would also like to lender the hearty chaukg of us both to the many who have helped us in our official duties during the past year, particularly those members of the local sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, who ,besides rendering magnificent service on behalf of the Red Cross, also acted as the local commit tec for the Lady Galway Guild, Our thanks arc also due in particular to Pipe M.ajor Nairn of Hawera, who helped to make the recent Red Cross Children’s Fair so conspicuous a success. That the year has been a successful one so far as the town is concerned, in spite of the war that has been raging, no one will venture to deny. The record busineSjj done during the Christmas week showed that the town at last is definitely and unmistakably on tie upward grade, and if this wore not enough the extraordinary large attendance at the Seaside Improvement Society’s Gala (Day at the beach off. New, Year’s Day served to show that the outside public realise at last that Patea is indeed a popular seaside resort with advantages second to none in Taranaki. The Centennial Memorial Committee I'ave every reason to be proud of their memorial, whose value to the town cannot be measured in pounds, shillings and pence. The outstanding need for tho Now Year must be united effort on the part of us all to assist the authorities in the winning of the war. Everything else must be subordinated to this. We do not know what lies before us, but 1 * the knowledge that our .cause is a just one encourages us in tho hope that if we help ourselves and put forward our best efforts, victory will be ours, and God will give us a lasting peace. E. F. HEMINGWAY, Mayor.
