WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD

ORDINARY MEETING

The ordinary monthly meeting of the AYauganui Education Board was held on AA’ednesday, Air. E. P. Hemingway presiding. Col. J. 11. AYuvlo and Messrs Bntchelar, A'. Annabel], P. Alunro, A. si Coleman, 1.. A. Bailey, I. W. Mudford, AY. IT. Brown and AA T . T. Boneiield were also present. The chairman’s report was read as follows— CIIAL UMAX’S P EPO UT T have to report that since the last meeting of the board I visited AYauganui and Palmerston North and, in company with the deputy C.'.airmail and the acting Senior Inspector, examined candidates desirous of entering the leaching profession. lam glad to be aide to report that the caiubdates on the whole were well up to standard, and those eventually accepted should be a valuable addition to the ranks of the teachers of the Dominion. I have to thank Air. Mudford who attended at Palmerston North and rendered assistance, which was greatly ap-

preciated . In company with the architect, I visited Uaurimu, Kakahi, Owhnngo and Manunui Schools on Saturday, 4th lust, when measurements were taken for asphalting work already authorised by the department. I found that in none of these school grounds was there any asphalt whatever. In Manunui, in particular, a large school, in addition to no asphalt, the re was not a blade of grass in the playground, the surface being pumice soil, with the result that in winter the children have to play in mud after rain, -whilst in summer, when the wind blows, they are covered with dust. The conditions I found exist-ing'-at this school alone, to say nothing of those at Uaurimu, Owhaugo and Kakahi, afford ample justification for my action at the September meeting of the board’ in declining to support a grant: for additional asphalting work at a city school -where a large area - of as plait already exists. I have to thank the deputy chairman, Air. Coleman, for kindly taking my place at the South Alakirikirl Jubilee. Resignations: —The following resignations of teachers have been received siime last meeting.— Teachers leaving board’s service.— Mr. L. J. Plank, head master, College Street; Air. U. AY. Towers, sole teacher, AYairaariuo; Air. S. C. Uosser, Assistant master, AYest End; Miss AT. Buckler, assistant mistress Alanunui; Miss N. Goldbnry, relieving staff.

W’HENl'i AKl T RA: The committee of the Whcnuakura School asked that urgent attention should be given to the matter of rebuilding the school residence. 'The architect reported that the residence Avas in a poor state but there Avcre others in the board’s district which wore in a Averse state. The residence Avas on the l;st for rebuilding, and Avorfd be re-built as soon as the other more urgent cases were dealt with.

The head teacher’s request for a hot water service was granted.

WANGANUI CAST; The committee asked thait repainting work be canned out. The architect reported that he had only enough paint on hand to paint the new buildings erected and owing to the import restrictions, no further supply could be obtained. The work was held over until supplies of paint were available.
