WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD

ORDINARY MEETING The ordinary monthly meeting ot the Wanganui Education Board was hold on Wednesday, Mr. E. F, Hemingway presiding. Messrs N. Anna bell (ms. nganui), J. Mudford (Foxtou), J. Batchelar (AVaituna W.), P. Munro (Utiku), R. Duke.son (Hunterville), M. H. Oram and Co I. Whyte E'.S.O. (Palmerston N.), were also present. The following- business of local and general interest was transacted: CHAIRMAN'S REPORT The Chairman reported as follows: The past month has been a quiet one so far as special functions are concerned. On 28th. instant, the Whakarongo School is holding its -Diamond Jubilee and invitations have boon received for the Board to be represented by the Chairman, Messrs. Munro, Batchelor and Mudford, the Secretary and Senior Inspector. A very line souvenir booklet has been prepared by the Headmaster, Mr. H. W. 'Wood, and he is to be congratulated on the excellence of its production .

RESIGNATIONS The following resignations have been received since last meeting;— Teachers leaving Board’s Service: — Mr. C. R. Horton; Solo Teacher, Poukiore, Mr. W. E. Gudsell; Sole Teacher, Omatano. Mr. B. A. M-cElwain; -Sole Teacher, Harataha. Miss E. M. Gibson; Assistant, Castlediff. Miss D. K. Curtin; Assistant, Ko. pane. Miss M. Lowe; Assistant, Parewanui. Miss E. Bishop; Assistant, Queen’s Park. WAITOTAEA It 'was unanimously resolved on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. A. S. Coleman, that the Board apply to the Department for a grant for the installation of a septic tank at the School, provided a permanent supply of water can be obtained. WAVERLEY It was decided that the Board’s seal be affixed to the lease of the Waveriey Reserve to the Farmers’ Co.op. Organisation Society and that the Chairman and Secretary sign same. MANUTAHI It was decided to accede to the Mauutahi Committee’s request for assistance in executing ground improvements. The Chairman pointed out that the committee was prepared to contribute the sum of £2O towards the work, which would be of a permanent nature. COMMITTEE ALLOWANCES It was decided \to pay all School Committee allowances monthly for schools from grade 4 upwards. CONTINUOUS READERS The Department niotifiejd tlija-t a grant of £374 would be available for Continuous Readers, for the year. The Chairman said .that this was a big increase, on last year’s griant which was only £9l. BRIDGE ROAD It was decided that the School Library be transferred to the Waverley School, as the Bridge Road pupils would be attending the AYaverley School in the future. PATEA It was decided to apply to the Taranaki Land Board for Sections 6, 7 and 8 of Block 42 Patea, part of an Edu. cation Resorye as a site for a new residence for the head teacher.

KOHI The Architect was authorised to arrange for the cleaning up and fencing of the school site at an estimated cost of £IG. S.P.C.A. A request from Mr. C. M. St routs, President of the Wanganui Branch, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for permission to conduct an essay competition for the Board to . circularise schools, was unanimously granted, the Chairman re. marking the Society was one of those institutions that deserved' the support of everyone. PALMERSTON NORTH The question of a site for an intermediate school in Palmerston North concerning whicii there had been some controversy was finalised by the adoption of a report submitted by the Pah. merston members, advocating the acquisition of a new site instead of utilising the College Street School site. It was pointed out that the new site was not available previously as there was a Id roomed house on it. As this had now been removed it was possible to acquire the site at a reasonable ligure. Mi', hi. 11. Oram moved the resolution, and in seconding it, Col. .T. H. Whyte said t}mt if the site were lost a central site for an Intermediate School in Palmerston North would bo lost for all time. The two Palmerston North members of the board and the secretary -were, authorised to complete negotiations for the purchase of the site.

Mr, Oram also moved that the Board place on record its appreciation of the wort of the secretary, Mr. G. N. Boulton in assisting the various sub. committees during the month particularly in connection with the Intermediate School question.

The chairman said the secretary had also produced a mass of helpful infor. nation on the occasion of the recent visit of the Minister of Education, the Hon. Peter Fraser. So. long hs the board had men like Mr. Boulton on its staff, it would be the most successful education board in the Dominion. “
