KNOX CHURCH

EUNRLSE FAIR, A SUCCESSFUL DAY. The Sunrise Fair in aid of the funds of Knox Church, which was held on Friday last, proved most successful, brisk business being done at the 'Various stalls throughout the afternoon and evening. The fair was opened by Mr. E. F. Hemingway, who apologised for the absence of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, both of whom were out of town. Mr. Hemingway stressed the point that all churches of whatever denomination should receive all the help that could bo given them, for they aimed at making the world a better place for all to live in. The chief aim of those who had the welfare of their fellow men at heart was peace for all time. This could not be brought about until the people wore religious minded and curried out the tenets of the Christian religion. War in the present age was, or should be, unthinkable, and all should work for its abolition. Hence every religious body that advocated the brotherhood of man should receive support. He hoped the fair, for which the members of the church had worked so hard, would bo a complete success. The fair was then declared open amid applause. The following were the stall-holders: Produce: Mcsdamcs Kaismith and Oliver.

Sewing: Mcsdames Balsillie and Richards. Cake: Mcsdames Pauling and Lund. Swc’cts: Miss B. McCarty and Miss L. Masters. Flowers: Mcsdames Watt ami R. Hunger and Miss Boagey. Afternoon tea: Mcsdames Sutherland, Kettles, McDonald, Misses McDonald (2), Adams, and Meharry. Fruit salad: Misses Kettles (2) and Ford. Mystery parcels: Miss V. Hunger. Ir. the evening an excellent concert programme was rendered-, tho items, which were out of the ordinary, being received with well-deserved applause. The following contributed to the programme: Vocal items, Miss Ruth Mann, Mrs, F. W. Hamel, .Mrs. ’G. Corbett, Mr. F. Naismith, Elocutionary items, Misses Annie Hail. Iris McDonald, and Mr, W. Watt. At the conclusion of the .concert programme tho Rev. H. B. Burnett, in a brief speech, thanked those who had taken part in. the concert and all who had assisted to make the fair so complete a success, particularly the members of other churches. It was not the financial success that was the chief tiling to be aimed at, although funds were always most acceptable, but it was the cementing of the bonds of good fellowship between members of the churches that functions like tho present brought about. In this direction the fair had been most successful, and he again expressed his appreciation of the work of all who had helped that day.
