SUPS OX MAIN HOAD. To the Editor. Sir, —In view of the large number of slips that are continually coming down on the main road between Wanganui and Havvera, I. would suggest that the Highways Board procure a mechanical shovel to be used for removing the slips as they occur. This device would do as much in an hour ■als the gangs of-men with wheelbarrows do in a week. When not in arse for removing slips it could be used in the road widening work which is at prerent being done with the pick and shovel. The slips between ■Wanganui and Haw era arc really dangerous insome cases (here being just room foi one car to pass. Meeting another car at night on the portion of the road where there arc several slips renders one liable cither to a capsize or a collision. With a mechanical shovel the slips could all have been cleared long since, instead of being left in so dangerous a. state as at present.— A'ours, etc., , K.G.E. DOUGLAS CHEDiT AND ALBEKTA.

To the Editor. Sir, —In view of the repeated statements which have appeared in the Press during lire past few weeks us to the failure of Social • Credit in Alberta, followed by a recent Press cablegram that Social Credit was about to bo introduced into Alberta by means of -a 'Governmental regulation, we would ask you in a spirit of fair play to publish the reply just received from the Hon. AVm. Aberhnrt, Premier of Alberta, in answer to a request for his comments on the reports which have fronj time to time appeared in the Xew Zealand and Australian newspapers. The Premier of Alberta replies as. follows: ‘ ‘ There has been no general demand for the immediate payment of .Social Credit dividends. Prior to the general elections I rc.peatodly advised the. public that at least eighteen months would be required to set up the necessary machinery for Social Credit. There has bvon no deviation- from that . statement. Our people are bearing with'ns. patiently while the necessary preliminary work is being completed. Upon taking office.. wo ’found the- Provincial Treasury empty, and a groat deal of our time lias been devoted to arranging temporary linancial 'accommodation. Wo have a refunding scheme under consideration, and are bending every effort to bring it to a successful conclusion, thereby substantially reducing the rate ’of interest oh our provincial debt. We have considered it necessary to consolidate our position in this way before proceeding with our majbr Social Credit programme; 1 there is every evidence that the people of our province have accepted this procedure as being a very sound one. '.There is no Truth in the. story that hundreds of married couples quit, their jobs in October in anticipation of the dividends, nor is there any “foundation for the story that a quarrel ..has developed' between Major Douglas and myself. ’ ’ The foregoing statement should materially assist the public of the Dominion in - clearing up the mystery about; the reports in> circulation that Social Credit in Alberta has failed; when the actual facts show that it has not yet bobhatried. —Sours, etc., THE DOUGLAS . SOCIAL CHEDIT MOVEMENT OF N.Z. (Inc.)
