FIFTH BIIiTHDAY PAHTY. The Patca Women's Instilate celebrated its fifth .an'n’ivor.snry on Friday afternoon in ideal weather, when a delightful liirthday party was held in the Town Hull supper room. There was an attendance of well over 100, inclnd’.i.ig visitors from the Kakar-a-mea, Opaltu, Ancklrr.ul Central, Alaxwcll, Apiti Lsi s tit lit es, the Alton, Manutahi, and Wiienuaknra branches of the AV.D.F.U. The supper room was tastefully decorated for the occasion, and the chairs were arranged in a double horseshoe arrangement making it easy for all to move about. Before commencing th.e parly the president, AT rtf. A. A. Garey, referred to‘ the bereavement snlVeml by .Mrs. F. Pamsbottom, president of the Ka‘karamoa AVomen V institute, and first president of the Patea Women’s Instil ate, whose. mother had passed away that morning. All present stood in silence' as a mark of respect. Airs. Oarey extended a very hearty welcome to all those present, particularly the visiting members of the neighbouring institutes, and tire branches of the AV.D.F.U. The ‘‘Otic to Friendship” was then sung. An amusing hand-shaking competition was then hold, the winner being Airs. Baker.. Community singing followed, and was well enjoyed. Miss Ona Adams rendered a contralto solo well, and responded to an encore. Miss Marian Hamerton acted as accompanisto. Miss Betty McCarty gave a recitation, “The 2Ad Toy,” in a very sympathetic; manner, and responded with a short, humorous piece. A soprano solo by Airs. G. W. Corbett was then ‘enjoyed, as well as her encore number. Airs. A. Carey acted as accompanisto. A dual guessing competition caused a great deal of merriment', the winners being Airs. Walker and Miss AlcCarty. A soprano solo by Airs, Irwin Jones was well received, her encore number being ‘‘Love's a Merchant.” Airs. A. Carey was the accompanisto. Miss it nth Alan a, who sang next, was enthusiastically received, her rich (contralto voice being hoard to good effect -iu the song ‘‘Arise O Sun.”'-As aii’ encore number'*‘Oh, Promise Ale,' w;as beautifully rendered, and in response to loud applause Miss Aiann kindly gave yet, another number, ‘‘A Slave’s Song.” A competition, blowing up paper bags by two teams, was held, and caused a lot of fun.

A delicious afternoon tea was then passed round, and speeches of congratulation made by Mrs. Mountfort (Kohi Institute), Hilliar. (Opaku Institute), Aliss Mehurry (Kakaramca Institute), Airs. 'Tayler (Alton W.D.F.IT.), Airs. Niven (Manutahi AV.D.F. I'.), and Mrs. Wither (Wheimtukura AV.D.F.U.). Mrs. F. Slieild, on behalf of noninstitute members, thanked the Tatea members for the delightful afternoon. Mrs. Carey expressed her appreciation! of the many .kind wishes expressed, and her pleasure at the large, attendance. She also thanked those who had contributed to the programme and Mrs. C. Martin for making and icing the fine birthday cake, which she cut. The cake proved as delicious as it looked, and Airs. Alartiu was heartily ;congratulated. A happy afternoon closed with the “National Anthem.”
