BEAUTIFYING PATEA.

ACTIVITY IX AT AIN STREET. Considerable progress has been made with tire clearing and fencing of the reserve opposite the Catholic Church a Patea, the beautifying of which is on of the objects of- the Patea AA'omeir. Institute Garden Circle. Iho trees have been' felled and most of the timber removed and the debris burned. Enclosure of the area is being done by the Borough Council's workmen, who are erecting a rustic fence with material obtained from the trees. The Garden Circle members intend planting rambler .roses around the fence as a preliminary to beautifying the section.

The rocks and gravel for the rock garden about the base of the memorial ia the Triangle are now on the site, and a start will be made with the construction of the rockery as soon as conditions permit. Alcmbers of the Garden Circle will plant the rockery and will maintain it. As a result of the Garden Circleh efforts the town should present an attractive appearance in the years to come, and this should result in people being induced to take up residence in Patea. The town has many natural advantages in the shape of climate, river, sea port, and healthy situation, ,iu addition to the advantages provided by the citizens, such us the Domain, with its tennis, croquet, and sports ground, to say nothing of the bowling green and magnificent public library. In the past the town, it must' be admitted, with its many leasehold sections with small buildings on them, has not attracted visitors, but with the beauty spots now provided, thanks to the council and (lie Garden Circle, there should be another talc to tell. The latest work of the council and the Circle ■ marks another distinct stej forward in the history of the town.
