PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ A.A.A.

ANNUAL SPORTS. The annual sports of the Patca and District Public Schools’ A.A.A. were held in the Domain on Saturday. The entries were almost a record, and some excellent sport was witnessed. flTio Alton School was the winner of the school championship, the Waverley School having the honour of gaining the most points outside the handicap. The whole of the proceedings were carried through without a hitch of any kind, thanks largely to the . splendid organisation and the indefatigable efforts of the secretary, Mr. J. A. Wither, together with the co-operation of a large band of assistants, who worked assiduously throughout the day, ably Jed by the president, Mr. D. M. Jillett.

At the conclusion of the sports Mr, D. M. Jillett, president of the association, in a brief speech, expressed his gratification at seeing so many present from Wavcrlcy. He thanked, them for their assistance, and for then work in connection with the recent swimming sports, which he hopcu would be an annual fixture at Wavcrley. Mr. Jillett also .paid a warm tribute to those who assisted throughout the day and had helped to make the gathering a success. The gate, he stated, was not as good as in former years, and he hoped that next year there would be a greater attendance of the public to show their interest in the association’s work. The association, he said, was very pleased to secso many of the Education Board’s officials present, including Mr. McMurtric, senior inspector, Mr. Crosbie, inspector, Mr. <G. N. Boulton, secretary, and Mr. E. E. Hodge, architect. He then called upon Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the "Wanganui Education Board, to present the trophies won. Mr. Hemingway, in the course of a brief speech, said it was more than pleasing to sec the keen interest that was being taken in amateur sport in the district. He reminded the children that when they ran, not for the sake of getting something, but for the honour of winning, they 'wore assured then of the best boy or girl winning. If they only took part in sport for the sake of personal gain there was the danger of some one offering a competitor a bigger reward than the prize not to win, and they would then not know who was really the best runner. Under the amateur system they knew, who were the best athletes. Mr. Hemingway urged the children not to forget those whom they owed so much to in this district for the sport they had enjoyed. He mentioned the late Father Duffy, Mr. J. Matthews, Mr. 0. M. -Strouts, Mr. F. W. Locker, Mr. C. J. Gardiner, and Mr. Gordon Fraser, and many others who had fostered amateur sport in the district. Mr. Hemingway briefly introduced Mr. G. N. Boulton, the new secretary of the Education Board, to the gathering, and called for three cheers for the Education Board officials who w r cre present. Mr. Hemingway then handed the trophies to the winners, congratulating each in turn.' , In presenting the championship cup to Alton, Mr. Hemingway said the previous day he had had the pleasure pf presenting the championship b inner to the Upokongaro School, which was in charge of Mr. Clcmancc, who had been head teacher at Alton for some years.

Mr. Sadler, in a brief speech, said there was one on whom the brunt of the work had fallen, namely the secretary, Mr. J. A. Wither, and who was deserving of the thanks of all for what he had done. At Mr. Sadler *s call hearty cheers were given for Mr. Wither. Cheers for the chairman of the Education Board brought to a conclusion a most enjoyable day. The creature comforts of the visitors were attended to by Mrs. C. J. Gardiner in her usual capable manner, leaving nothing to bo desired.
