WAKENED BY FIRE SIREN

MAX FINDS HOUSE ABLAZE,

Awakened In* the siren of the approaching' lire engine to find his home blazing, Mr. T. S. Gedge, an elderly Stratford resident, had to make a hasty escape. He was not injured and liis house was not destroyed. 'The flicker of the flames was noticed by Mr. AY. Bailey as he passed the fiveroomed wooden cottage in Cordelia Street. Mr. Bailey aroused a nearby neighbour and the brigade was summoned by telephone. At practically the moment the engine arrived Mr. Gedge. a heavy sleeper, effected a hurried exit.

The tiro had not penetrated to any extent bevond the kitchen where it originated, and less than ten miutes with the hoses served to tpiell it. The cause of the fire was not ascertained. Mr. Gedge was alone in the house, is wife being at Christchurch and his daughter on holiday iu the country.
