GOLF

(JHOOGE YOUR GOLF WITH CARE,

It is becoming quite fashionable to give golf clubs and material for Xmas and birthday presents. This is all very well, and stimulates the interest of new players, but one should be very careful in the selection of clubs for the beginner.

A new player should never start with clubs that arc too light. It may ruin him forever as a golfer of merit. At the same time he should not start with clubs that are too heavy. The disadvantages are more than obvious. Especially, attention should be given to the selection, and the advice of a professional would be very helpful.

Again, it is inadvisable to start off with too many clubs. The use cf the right club at the right moment is an important factor in golf, and the possession of too many fancy clubs is detrimental. The face of the clubs should not be too straight. I would advise a beginner to equip himself with a driver, a brassic •with a fair amount of loft, a No. 2 iron, a No. 5 mashic niblick, and a putter. With these clubs he will be able to make any shot that he may be called upon to make. Later, as he progresses and his play improves, he will find it necessary to add to this collection clubs that will enable him to negotiate the most diflicult shots. (Hints by Leo Dicgcl, professional golf champion of America, who gave golf fans instructions in the M-G-M picture, “A Lesson in Golf.”)

Anita Page profited much by the golf lessons Leo Diegel gave her while ho was making a series of pictures for M-G-M.
