An ingenious traud was revealed ir Hip Auckland Police Court when thrc( young' men admitted making a falsi document purporting to bo a Icttei from London .solicitors. They took a letterhead printed by a citv firm and had typed on it a letter purporting to inform the recipient that he had been bequeathed £250 in cash and. an annuity of £IOB. On this a city loan company, after reference tc its solicitor, advanced £25. T'hlev tried the same trick with another loan company, which also referred the matter to a solicitor. The latter detected the fraud and rang the police. Athol Henry Leighton, 50, was com in it ted' to Borstal for three years; William Arthur Clordinc, 25, received 18 months’ gaol; Rupert George Bell, 21, two years’ probation.
