HEAVY INCREASES IN RENTS.
RAILWAY DEPARTAIENT HOUSES. AS AIUCH AS 3(j(i PER CENT. RISE. Very heavy increases in the rentals of houses leased to railway servants by the Railway Department have been brought under notice by the member of Parliament for Port Chalmers, Air. A. E. Ansel!. The increases in some cases amount to as much as 300 per cent. instances of increases which came into force on February 1 arc as follows, the new rental being shown in parentheses: 7s fid (22s fid), 15s; (-.ms 9d), Iss (44s (id), 8s fid (24s fid), fis fid (19s). 9s fid (2Ss Sd), 10s fid (24s 8d). ■ Air. Ansell communicated with the Atinister, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, on the subject, and received a reply stating that the increases were imposed as a result of the Royal Commission’s recommendations and alter very close investigation. It was not considered the men wore being harshly dealt with. Air. Ansell adds he intends to voice a protest in the House of Representatives.
