PATEA DOMAIN BOARD

ORDINARY MEETING The ordinary monthly meeting of the Patea Domain Board was held on Friday Mr. E. F. Hemingway presiding. Messrs. Jenkins, Papps, Cronin, and Locker were also present. An. apology was received from Mr T. E. .Roberts for non-attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A deputation consisting of Mesdanics Masters, {Rumsbottoin, and Messrs. Ramsbottom and E. 0. Horner waited upon the board with the request that the board would undertake the cutting and markmg of the croquet court during the season. A letter was read from the Croquet Club’s president, Mr. Horner, supporting the request. . After discussion it was resolved that the Croquet Club be given permission to employ the board's caretaker with the motor mower for the purpose of mowing the club's courts as required, the club to pay the sum of half a. guinea towards the cost of benzine.

Before the deputation withdrew Mr. Cronin said he would like to congratulate the club on the excellent job it had made of the lawn, which was a credit to the club and the town. The deputation then withdrew.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chairman reported that since the last meeting of the board the summer house at the oval and the shelter seat at the Oxford Street end of the Domain had been completed and a gate way to lhe croquet and tennis courts irected. The motor mower had been in constant use with complete success. The motor had been used on the Tennis and Croquet Clubs’ lawns, its close jutting being a surprise to members. vYith the consent of members the Domain Board had placed the shed and grounds at the disposal of the Wanganui Education Board for purposes of a, children's Health Camp, as it was ascertained that the camp usually held an the late Mr. Lethbridge's property at Turakina wmuld not be hold owing to Mr. Lethbridge’s death. The oval and grounds and hedges were in first class order. Application had been made to the Borough Council for the water to be laid on to a drinking fountain inside the memorial gateway should the board decide to procure a fountain. The request had been granted.

The report was adopted and the action of the chairman in placing the Domain at the disposal of the Wanganui Education Board for a children’s Health Camp, and also fot applying for the water main was confirmed. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Locker, it was unanimously resolved that the board place the Domain and sheds at the disposal of the Minister of Education free of cost for the purposes of a children’s Health Camp.

Mr. Locker said he had spoken to several farmers in the district, who had expressed their willingness to assist the camp in the same way that Mr. Lethbridge had done.

A letter was read from the Patea Borough Council stating that the council would be willing to lay the water pipe from the main to a point within the memorial gatervay for the purpose of supplying water for a children’s drinking fountain. The chairman moved that the thanks of the board be tendered the council for their action, and that the matter of drinking fountain 'be left in the secretary’s hands, with power to expend a sum not exceeding £5 on same. Seconded by Mr. Lapps and carried. It was decided that the matter of draining the swamp be deferred for the present.

Mr. Papps said he thought it only fair that some recognition should (be made of the work of the chairman, who was mainly responsible for the very tine state of the Domain at the present time. He would move that the board place on record its warm appreciation of the services rendered to the board by the chairman. The- resolution, which was seconded by Mr. Locker, was put to the meeting by the secretary and carried. Mr. Hemingway, in thanking members for their appreciative rcsobition, said there was only one point on which he and the members were ‘ not in accord, and that was that he considered the success of the board was due chiefly to their united efforts and the support they had accorded him, whilst they declared that the success was due to him.

Mrs. Anson’s offer of 5s per week for the right to sell ico cream in the Domain v.as accepted. Accounts wore read and passed for payment and the board rose.
