WOMEN’S INSTITUTIONS.

ACCOMMODATION PROPOSALB

A largely attended public meeting was held in Waverley on Tuesday evening to consider ways and means of erecting a suitable building to accommodate the various women’s institutions of benefit to Waverley and surrounding district. Mr. R. P. Palmer, chairman of the Town Board, occupied the chair and briefly outlined the objects of the meeting.

Mrs. Dr, Graves, on behalf of the Blanket Society, outlined the aims and objects of this society and gave a resume of the work as carried on bv the

organisation since its inception. .Mrs. Dr. Duncan then spoke on behalf of the women's division of the Fanners’ Union.

Mrs. T. AY. Wall spoke on behalf of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, pointing out that besides consideration of the temperance question the W.C.T.U. pledges itself to help any movement in the welfare of women and children. The Rest Room Committee was represented by Miss Elmslic in the absence of Miss Muir, superintendent.

Besides a rest room for ladies and visitors to the town the rest room also formed a Girls’ Club, which, in the opinion of the speaker was of great benefit to young yirls coming into our midst.

Mrs. A. Masters spoke on behalf of the Women’s Institute, endorsing the previous speakers’ remarks, and promised all possible assistance from all members of the institute.

After hearing the various speakers the chairman thou asked for any discussion on questions in connection with the scheme.

To test the feeling of the meeting Mr. L. E. Xoilson moved and Mr. J. A. McQueen seconded that an up-to-date building is required in Waverley capable of accommodating all the organisations represented at this meeting.

In answer to a question the chairman siiid the Blanket rooms would be kept separate from all other rooms in the building. The question of the cost of the building came up for discussion. One speaker suggested that a committee composed of members representing the various organisations be set up to go into the question of cost and ways and moans and report to a meeting of the public to be held at a later date. As an ■amendment to Mr. Xoilson’s original motion Air. McQueen moved that a combined Blanket, Best Boom, etc., do erected in Waverley.

Mr. Aiken .suggested that the building scheme include accommodation-for the Plnuket .Society and ladies rest room only. Mr. Aiken considered that there was already ample accommodation in Wavcrlcy for the other kindred women’s organisations. Speaking to the amendment Mr. Dallison said that the original motion be loft stand, pending the report of the sub-committee at a later date.

When put to the mooting the original motion was carried. Mr. McQueen’s amendment failed for want of a seconder.

Xominalions for a working committee were then calk'd and the following ladies and gentlemen were enrolled: — Mesdames Duncan, D. Graves, Forsyth, Wall, Masters, Howard, Misses Muir, Elmslio, Messrs. Dr. Graves, G. McGregor, It, P. Palmer. J. A. McQueen, W. Macfarlane. H. Middleton, J. Currie, E. C. Dallion, and D. Forsyth. At a subsequent meeting of the newly formed committee it was decided to meet and report progress in a week’s time.
