A most cheering and optimistic view of the c.u Imtry ’a prospects throughout the coming : season is taken by Mr. E. Casey, North Island divisional superintendent of railways. Mr. Casey is one whose constant /travelling keeps him in touch with conditions in , all parts of the North Island. “ This year wc will have peak production, multiplied by peak prices, and it will be a good thing for the country all round," he said.
Mr. Ca'sey added he had been struck with the splendid appearance of the pastures generally up and down the country. There was no question about it that the present growth had been largely induced by the grout amount ox fertilisers used by the farmers. The movement in the direction of using more manures was materially assisted bv the action of the Railway Department in substantially reducing manure freights. The Department anticipated thet fanners would realise the assistance given them in this way and support the national transport system üben sending their produce to market. Xrvyoased prosperity of the country jphjjpli.'-’+ely reflected itself in transportation, and, with increased production. and better prices, the Department naturally expected mi increase in longdistance railway traffic, which during times of stress always showed a decided falling off.
