TESTING OF PUREBRED DAIRY COWS

(By W. M. Singcton, Director of flic Dairy Division) During the first quarter of the present calendar year some 46 cows received certificates under the certificutc-oi-rccord system. Perhaps the most creditable performance noted in tho list is that of the junior two-ycar-okl Ayrshire, Fair Maid of Greenbank, owned and tested by Mr W. Moore, of Homcbush, Masterton. Commencing test at tho ago of two years 27 days, she has gained a C. 0.8. for 673.561 b butterfat. This entitles her to the leadership of the two-year-old Ayrshircs, displacing Mr W. Hall’s Dimple of Edcndalc (529.461 b butterfat), on a record commenced at two

years 327 days. Fair Maid of Giccubank is flic only tested daughter of Brown Boy of Iviki. Her dam is Bright Smile 4th of Grccnbank (also owned and tested by Mr Moore), who has qualified for certificate of record on a yield of 519.(321b butterfat at two years 21 days. Records such as these arc doing much to bring the Ayrshire breed to that place which it deserves among our special-purpose dairy breeds. Among the Friesian s the highest yield here recorded is that of Dominion Jocrcst, who was bred and tested at the Central Development Farm, Weraroa. Her production of (592.701 b butterfat was made under a twicc-a-day milking, and practically average farm conditions during the whole period. This is the fourth consecutive lactation on which Dominion Jocrcst has qualified for a first-class C.0.1f. Her sire is the imported Woodercst Joe, sire of 19 C.0.1t. daughters, all of whom have gained their certificates on records made at the Central Development Farm. The dam.of Dominion Jocrcst is Dominion Julia dc Kol, a certificated daughter of Sir de Kol Inka Pietcrtje, (imp.), who is sire of 1(5 C.O.it. daughters. The highest record in the Jersey section is that of the senior two-year-old Holly Oak .Sister Sue, with 671.7<51b butterfat. This heifer was tested by Mr It. Weinberg, of Nihoniho, and bred by Mr John Halo, of Xcw Plymouth. The pedigree of Holly Oak Sister Sue is a particularly strong one, especially on the male side. She is closely related to such proven sires as Soumise Tim, Sunflower’s Perseus (both champion butterfat bulls), Molina's General, Soumise Majesty, and Campanile’s Sultan, Sultan Daisy (9(58.221b butterfat), at one time Xcw Zealand’s cham- ♦ ‘mi C.O.E. Jersey eow, appears twice n the sirc : ’s side and four generations back.
