WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD

ORDINARY MEETING The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was hold on Wednesday, Mr W. A. Collins presiding. Messrs Hemingway, Eraser, Mclntyre, Aiken, Joblin, Hodges, Birnio and Durward were also present. Before the- business of the meeting was proceeded with, the chairman referred feelingly to the loss sustained by the country in the death of the late Prime Minister, Mr Massey, and the sympathy of the Board was tendered Mrs Massey in her bereavement, the resolution being carried in silence, all members standing. The following matters of local and general interest were dealt with:— APPOINTMENTS Kohl. —Miss Sybil A. S. Parker, Nukumarn.—Miss N. M. Hahey. Patea.—-Miss Helen A. Kiely, Owhango.—Miss Sanson. DEPUTATION A deputation of settlers from Otanakapua, near Ohingaiti, waited on the Board with the request for a school in iheir district. ’The settlers offered 'to give three acres of land for a school, free of cost, and also to provide accommodation for a teacher. The school would have a roll of 6.1 children in a few years, if erected. The proposed site was 5A miles from the Ohingaiti School. It was decided to obtain further information with regard to the number of pupils available, when the Board would do its best to have the school established. GENERAL Wlaverley.—lt was decided that the teal of the Board be affixed to the lease from the Methodist Church trustees of the section adjoining the school site, ..he rent to be paid by the Board. It was decided to accept the offer of the Wanganui College Board of Trustees of a strip of land adjoining the Board’s office, at a rental of £25 per annum. The Palmerston North Central School Committee wrote calling attention to the state of the school roof, which needed repairing badly. The architect's report, recommending a pitched roof, was read. It was stated that the cost would be about £1(500, whilst the vchool which was a few years ago erected under an outside architect ost some £15,000. •; ?.w|| It was decided to apply for a grant of £1(500 for the pitched roof. Westmere.—lt was decided to apply for a grant for additional accommodation at the school, as recommended by the architect.

Castlecliff.—lt was decided to grant the Committee £S towards the cost of a firewood shed. Patea and Ohaknne.—The Department wrote pointing out that the roll number of the District High Schools at Patea and Ohakuno was so low that it did not warrant the schools being - continued. The Department asked for the Board's opinion on the matter. The chairman said the roll, number had dropped owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic. The Chief Inspector said the attendance referred to was hist year’s—not the present year. Air Hemingway said, with regard to Paten, it was confidently anticipated that the attendance would be much ’higher next year, when there would be no question of disestablishing the ■school. . it was unanimously decided that the Department be notified that, in the opinion-of the Board, it is not advisable to disestablish these schools at the present time. Mataroa School.—The Chief Inspector reported that the environment of the Mataroa School was such as to bo worthy of special mention, and he recommended that an environment certificate be awarded the teacher, Mr D.
