BANQUET TO MINISTER

A biuiquct was tendered the Minister and party in the Town Hall supper room in the evening - , the function being one of the most successful ever held in the district. His Worship the Mayor presided over the gathering, which included the Hon. the Minister and party, Mr J. E. Corrigan, M.P., Mr A. T. Christensen (chairman of the Patea Harbour Board), Mr J. Gibbs (chairman Patea County Council), Mr Hutton (late Chief Postmaster at Wellington and the first Postmaster to be appointed to Patea), and a largo number of settlers from all parts of the district. The proceedings were most enthusiastic throughout. The speech of the Minister, in reply to the toast of “Our Guest,” occupied within a few minutes of an hour in delivering, and was both most interesting and instructive, and was received with loud and continued applause. Several other speeches were made during the evening, a full report of which will appear in our next issue. Before the proceedings terminated, the Hon. J. G. Coates took the opportunity of congratulating his Worship the Mayor on the excellent arrangements made for the opening ceremony and the function that evening, which he said were equal to anything in the largo cities.
