NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By 0.5.) Marten went in for a street treeplanting scheme some ten or a dozen years ago, planting cabbage trees at the edge of the footpath for a distance of about two miles along the main street. The trees have grown splendidly, and arc now about 15 foot high, with minks about eight inches in diameter, 'The trees are simply splendid. and alter the appearance of the bare street completely. They have the advantage over the piano trees that are so often planted in streets, in that they do not shade the roadway too much and do not litter the ground with j leaves in the autumn. Moreover, they 1 are always green and do not present the dismal and bare appearance that plane trees do in the winter. Some chav we may have an avenue of trees like Marten’s in Paten. Who knows? I am a great believer in daylightsaving, not on account of the farmer, for lie carries out the principle whether ho likes it or not, but for the benefit of those people who do no work after dark and got up about three hours after day has broken. These three hours arc a dead loss, and represent something like two and a half working days v . that could be put to good advantage in those days when increased outi put should bo the order of the day. AVhat people miss by lying asleep in the early hours, too! . I was struck by this fact on Monday, when coming down from Auckland in the Main Trunk express. I saw then tho best sunrise I have over seen in my life, and I have seen many in various parts of the world. The guard tipped mo the wink that we would bo close to Alts. Tongariro and liuapchu shortly, and I was fortunate enough to see the sun ii.se and clothe those mountains with go hi. They .were covered with snow right down to the foot, and the sun rising and casting its rays on them was a sight never to be forgotten. The rest of the passengers in tho carriage wero asleep and missed the 'beautiful sight, which would not have been, the case had they been daylight-savers.
