WAVERLEY SCHOOL

A considerable number of parents and friends of the Waverley School were present at the “break-up” concert on Friday afternoon last. Mr H. Middieton presided, and expressed the pleasure it gave him to see so many present, and explained that the object of the gathering was to bring parents more into touch with the school and its various activities. The speaker pointed out that not much could be done towards the improvement of "the buildings, which were old and out of date. The committee hoped to be able to announce the re-building of the oldest part of the school in the not very distant future. Much, however, could be done to tie grounds in the way of grading, tar-scaling, etc., matters to which the committee were now giving attention. The headmaster (Mr W. A. Brown) also expressed his gratification at seeing so many present, and asked parents to think of “our” school, not “the” school. He said that next year would be the jubilee of the school, it havingbeen opened in the old Town Hall on September 7, 1874, according to the school log-book. The speaker hoped that something worthy of the occasion would be done to mark the school’s half century. The following contributed to the programme of the concert: —Solos from Ngahina Aiken and Miriel Ship ton; recitations from Allen Tobeck, Gwen Thomason, Edgar Wilcox, Florence Loving, Melva Christenson, and lan Wallace; a dialogue from Dennis Dallison, Arthur Dickie, Keith Aiken and Harry Walker. Junior concerted songs were: “The Swing” and “When I was a Young Girl,” the seniors singing “John Peel” and “I’se Going Back to Dixie.” Melva Christenson and Lilian Walker sang “Bubbles,” Joan Ball and Margaret Elmslic acting the parts. * A collection in aid of Dr Barnardo’s Homes realised £3, 2/s*. This was augmented by £1 15/3, collected by Joan Ball, Barbara Barnett, Eunice Maull and Myrtle Hayes. The box-opening of the Young Helpers’ League yielded £1 1/3, making a grand total of £9 18/11*.
