THE TIMBER SHORTAGE.

AX EXTEEPELSIXG FIE hi. For some years Patca has been suffering through, shortage of timber, and for mouths past Messrs. Aitchison Ltd. timber merchants, have been endeavouring to secure adequate supplies from sources which have supplied their yard for half a century; but -as ■timber came to hand, the firm' state that it became increasingly ■evident' that, such was doled out more to suit the millers than the merchants. We understand from a conversation with a member of the above firm that they recently decided that the only way to he certain of supplies was to be in a position to control what timber they required, and with this end in view the company has purchased the output of a .sawmill which will bo established at Horopito in a month or so. At the present time the mill and plant arc being erected, and a tramway is being laid. As the bush to be worked is estimated to contain many years' supply for Patca and district, and there is a good chance of securing further areas later on, Patca should bo on an equal footing -with neighbouring towns regarding building material for years to conic. Messrs. Aitchison are to be heartily *. congratulated on the enterprise they have displayed, and we wish them cvcrv success in their venture.
