WAR RELIEF SCHOLARSHIPS

CONDITIONS APPEOVED

At the meeting of the Taranaki War Relief Association hold on Wednesday, when the question of War Scholarships was being considered, Mr. Atkinson said that tho High School Board's maximum was £4B. There were three terms at £l4 each and £6 was added. Tie association had provided for scholarships worth £SO, and he thought the allocation, as a matter of courtesy, should correspond with the amount allowed by the board, and should not exceed £4B. Mr. Bcllringor suggested that the £2 be allowed for books. He moved that it be left witli the chairman and Mr. Atkinson to recast tho regulations governing scholarships so as to bring them into line with the High School Board allowances.—Carried. Later the conditions of the scholarships were amended to provide that the association grant up to six scholarships, the full fees to bo paid up to an amount not exceeding £SO, with the exception of the two subsidised by the High School Board, which would be £24 with £8 out-of-pocket expenses for each. The chairman said that the association would receive periodical reports showing the progress made at school, and if proper advantage was not taken of tho opportunities afforded the executive may tako into consideration the cancellation 'of the scholarships.

Mr. Sage suggested that there might bo cases in which some form of technical education would be more advantageous than a High School education. The secretary was insructcd to take the necessary steps to advertise for applications for the scholarships in the press throughout Taranaki, the applications to be in time for the November

meeting. It was also decided to send copies of the conditions of the scholarships to school committees, and, at the suggestion of Mr. Atkinson, it was agreed to accept applications subject to the applicants passing the sixth standard at the December examinations.
