A SHIPPING CHANGE

AFTER THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS The Fa tea Farmers ’ Co-operative Freezing Coy. have recently made arrangeme.nls for taking over the agency of (he Wavcrloy Shipping Company from Mr. E. 0. Horner, who has acted as agent for various shipping companies trading (o tlie port for the last 3S years.

During this long period Mr. Horner has naturally seen many changes. In the early stages but one vessel traded to (he port apd an average of one trip per week from Wellington was the order of the day, the bar in those days being workable only occasionally, whilst at night time no arrivals or departures ever took place. To day the port is workable at any time and four steamers are trading regularly to it.

As an instance of the increase in hade it is worthy of note that the whole export of cheese from the Dominion for the year .1881 was valued at £(>,112, whilst for the year ending 31st December, .1917, the value was £3,949,251, a large portion of this going over the local bar. The figures incidentally go to show the progress made iu the dairying industry during the past 38 years.
