Cr. Belton said that the work on the main road was not very satisfactory. It was not good policy to open up a road in the winter time.

The Chairman said that regarding the grading on the main road this had been authorised and the work started but unfortunately the railway had refused to carry tar, etc., and they could not put the metal down properly. It was a pity the work had been started. The Engineer said that he had started the work when the glass was high and he anticipated a week's fine weather, but it broke quickly. It had not inconvenienced the public up to the present and it was almost finished now. General Cr. Taylor reported that several places required the attention of the surfaceman near Mr. Ginger's property and the drain required opening on the Hursthousc road. He would move that the matter be left with the Engineer and Cr. Gibbs to deal with. Seconded by Cr. Hurley and carried. Or. Dickie reported that there were a largo number of horses on the road near Whcnuakura which were a menace to the travelling public. The Chairman moved that Cr. Dickie be instructed to employ some drovers to round up the horses and impound them. Seconded by Or. Cave and carried. Cr. Taylor asked that some sanding be done on the Tainan road. The hill was in a very bad state and he would provide a horse and dray. The Engineer was instructed to attend to the work. Engineer's Report The Engineer's report was road. The Chairman moved the adoption of the report and stated that he wished to warn the Council against getting metal from the beach against the Belmont metal. The hardness of the metal was the main thing when the wear came into it. The various works would have been done long ago if they had got the metal from Belmont. Cr. Gibbs seconded the adoption of the report. The cost of the metal at Manawapou was the fault of the Councillors ; they should have accepted the contract offered them and they could have landed it on the road at 2s per yard less than Belmont, metal. Cr. Taylor said the Council did not have the plant to crush metal and it was far too expensive for them to get it crushed.

The resolution was carried. Accounts were read and passed for payment and the meeting closed.
