The Alton Tennis Clnb held Us annual

social evening on the 10th inst. The A weather was all that could be desired, ' and a large number were present. The stage was allotted to cards while a couple of ping pang tables, placed beside the stage were kept going all the evening. Mr R. Thornton - Best, the Club's Secretary, was untiling in fulfilling bis duties as M.O. About twenty-five couples took the floor the music being supplied by Misses Hodge (2). Oobine. Mesdames 0. Amon, Williams (Hawera), Proffitt and Mr D. Harley. Songs were contributed during the evening by Mrs TT. Sutherland, Mr Stuart MacDonald | jnr. (2), and Mr A. E. Washer.^ After supper, which was provided by the ladies, the President. Mr A. J. Gibbs, in'a . beat little Speech dealt with, the prospects of the .Club in the future, especially now the double court is an • accomplished fact. . Mr Gibbs then K anted the trophies. Mr G. V. oe’s trophy was won by Miss Proffitt and the President’s trophy by Mr W Neilson. The speaker also commented bn the way the ladies' had. “ stuck to their guns ” in supplying afternoon tea for the working bees in connection with improving the tennis courts.

The School tennis court is now completed, and the children are looking ’ forward to the opening day, which is fixed for the 14th inst. Some local sports have promised to donate trophies for competition amongst the children which should go a long way to encourage enthusiasm among them.

The many friends of Mr H, Amon will regret to hear of his recent he having being confined to his bed with a bad.'attack of The latest reports show that he is .progressing slowly.
