PATEA CEMETERY BOARD

Ordinary Meeting.

The Cemetery Board met immediately after the close of the Council when the following report was submitted ;

Report. The Oomroiitee begs to ropoit— That arrangements have been made for carting gravel for repairs to footways in Cemetery; that repairs to old soldiers’ graves are held over until the appointment of the new caretaker. The Committee begs to recommend —That tbe tender of Mr P. Dwyer, at £26, be bccpj ted for the lease for one year of the Cemetery Reserve. (

Or Bennett in moving the adoption of the report said he had been chair* man of the Committee for two years qmd he found that he could not be ontinuaMy running up to the Cemetery. Furthermore the Committee had brought down reports which had been turned down and they fo)t it would be better that the Com* miltee be discharged and two members of the Board appointed each month to lo’k af’er \he Cemetery. Gr Kamsbottcm seconded the motion.

Cr Grainger said he would like to spa Cr Bennett reconsider the portion with regard to the discharge of the Committee. He did not know anything that had been , done that r< fleeted on the Committee in any way. His Worship said that, the Board would not consent to the discharge of the Committee. Ho might say that at once.

Cr Egan said that the question of defining the boundaries of the reserve should be considered. At present he did not think the tenant was getting the whole,of the land be was entitled to. Ha would like to see Mr' Climie authorised to survey the land when next he was in town

Or Olenny said that a mistake had been made in letting the land for twelve mon’bs in view of the condition of the fences. The rent hsd already risen some 50 per cent in va?uo, but. if tbe land were let for a period of five years with the fences' in good order end with a right of renewal the rent would be increased by 100 per cent. It would be as well if this fact were borne in mind when the present lease expired. flis Worship said this would bo the better course -to pursue. They could not well make any any alteration at the present time. With regard to the question of appointing two members of,the Board each month to look after the Cemetery he Was sure this would result in failure. They bad tried the system with the Domain Board and it had failed miserably. He hoped Or Bennett would withdraw . fhe clause with regard to the Committee. The more that Cr Bennett growled the more pleased he (the Mayor) was because it showed he was • working hard; i Cr Bennett Said very often he was theonly Councillor attending the meetings of the Committee snd he would he - glad' to be’relieved .of his duties as chairman.

The report with the, clause dealing with the Committee deleted was then ‘ ■ >sv On the-motion .of the: Chairman /’seconded by Ur Bennett, Or May’s . name • was added to the Cemetery (Committee. . It was resolved that Mr Reed’s offer of services .as custodian be accepted. It was also decided that the Town Clerk express the Council's sympathy with Cr May in his recent illness and its hope for his speedy recovery.
