IN BANKRUPTCY.
Meeting of Creditors. Mr ft iy well, Official Assignee of Wanganui, held a meeting of creditors in the estate of Arthur Willis Blackwell alias Arthur Jones, adjudicated a banki .ipt on the petition of Messrs E P. Blako and E.. P. Palmer. Mr Sellar, of Hawera, appeared on behalf of Messrs Piercy Bros, the purchasers of the farm arid stock of the bankrupt, and Mr G H Graham, Waverloy, for the petitioning creditors. Mr MacDonald appeared ou hia own behalf, Mr Duffy for the firm of Williams, Duffy and Cstanach, and M- Palmer for Messrs Palmer Bros. The Official Assignee stated that he had called a meeting of the creditors in this estate but could give very little in forma* ti >n on the matter, ii fact the only information ho c mid give was from a letter he had receive! from Mr Graham, which he would read for the benefit of those concerned. The letter "was from Mr Jones and was a statement of the s-«lo of his fs>-ui to Messrs Piercy Bros., giving the amount paid down end the arrangements made for tho payment of the b lance, Mr Sellars also read a statement from Messrs Piercy Bros to the effect • h tt they had purchased Mr Jones’ farm, stock, implements etc., for £I4OO. They had paid down £3OO to the agent, Mr Greaves and he had sent his cheque to Mr Adams solicitor of Paten, for £230 and retained the balance as commission.
Mr Daffy stated tli.it be bad b en to see Mr Adams about that cheque and was told that Mr Jones had called on Mr Adams for the money and was handed the cheque for £230 Mr Piercy stated that the inducement held out t) tuem t < take immediate possession of the f irm win th -t they were to draw the milk cheque on the 20th of the month from he Wfa nuakura Daily Company bit they found that there were two orders on the cheque prior to theirs.
Mr Palmer asked if anything could he learned from the hank book, M* Griham Thu tmikrupt kept a banking *cc i unt but n ver opmted on it
The Offiiial Assignee said that perhaps s in-e in ue information might be ohtain n d from Mr Greaves, Mr McKenna a d Mr Ad ms Mr Bell-irs esked if the Assignee would take stops to find out if the people that had seized some of the good? had a bailment on them. The Assignee said he would.
Mr GrMmii uskcd if the A.signee would take siep.s to ascartaio whore Mr •Tones’ furniture went, to Tin lidlway D.ipartmeut could give the necessary information. It bad been railed from the Wnvarley Racecourse Station on March 7th. He would like the Assignee also to communicate with Mr Middleton, solicitor, of Weimate, and see what he knows ab-mt the fortune sl’eged to have been left bankrupt, ana the warrants that were said to be out for bis nr/cst.
Mr MacDonald said he believed Mr Jones had been bankrupt in Carterton before he came to Waverley, and had changed bis name when he left Carterton.
