THE MISSING STEAMER OHAU.
All Hope Abandoned. Wellington, May 25. The Union S.S, Company has now given up all hope of the Oban turning up, and the Managing Director, in a circular, advises branch managers to that effect, adding that the loss is very distressing to the directors, and as many of the officers and crew belonged to Dunedin they are brought very close in touch with the widespread sorrow entailed. The relatives and friends of those missing have the heartfelt sympathy of the directors and staff.
The officers were insured for the following amounts: -Captain Brewer £750 ; Mr McPherson, chief officer, £500; Mr Warrendor, second officer, £200; Mr If* Burns, chief engineer, £500; Mr J. Young, second engineer, £400; Mr Stevenson, third engineer, £SOO ; Mr A. G. Mathcsou, purser, £2OO. The Managing Director has instructed that all the Company’s vessels shall carry flags half-mast in all the ports next Sunday, as a mark of respect to the memory of the officers and crew of the Ohau.
