THE MEAT TRADE.
Sydney, July 31. The meat market shows a distinctly hardening tendency, and prices are advancing. Best mutton shows a rise of from 2s to 3s on last month’s quotations. In the course of interviews butchers state that really good sheep and cattle are hard to procure. There is, moreover, a likelihood of greater scarcity if the drought, which is becoming very severe in the grazing districts, continues. Graziers rushed their surplus stock into the market in fear of drought, and there is now a shortage. The large growing export of live and frozen meat combined must, it is considered, lead to considerable rise before long. Graziers are also beginning to look for improved prices. At the half-yearly meeting of the Graziers’ Meat Fxpoit Company, the report showed that the works estab lished at Nyngan had proved highly satisfactory, but that owing to the drought supplies of fat stock were limif°sj| and this had handicapped operations. Progress was being made in the establishment of works in other pastoral centres, and for this purpose it was intended to call up a sum of £35,000 capital. The report added that there was a promising future before the Company, and that it had been decided to consider the establish.pent of retail shops in London •
