THE MAGDALEN ASYLUM AN APPEAL TN appealing for subscription for tie FIRST MAGDALEN ASI L I JM in New Zealand, the Sisters of the “ Good Shepherd' 7 desire to express through me, their sincere gratitude to the inhabitants of ibis city and the colony generally for the kind co-operation afforded them since they commenced the great work to which their lives are devoted in their temporary residence, Manchester street North. Hourly we meet with a poor Magdalen, tired of misspent life, seeking a shelter, and finding no security against th > biting blasts ot temptation, turns away with the weight ot the world’s accusation, with the world s condemnation, and becomes the v'etim of an unholy impulse, which cannot he recalled without a sigh—nay, without u tear. Kindly, therefore, boar in mind—1. A most desirable site has been acquired for the Magdalen near Chiistchurch. 2. His 7 rain once Cardinal Moran laid the foundation stone at “ Mount Mag dal a’’ on the 18th of February ©Hast year, in the presence of 5000 people, and the first portion of the Asylum it nearly ■completed. 3 The advantage of the Magdalen will he extended to all New Zealand and e’cewliere, 4. The waifs and wanderers who are rescued from the path-; of misery and sin arc not asked to what c-eed they belong. It is sufficient that they need succour. 5. The inmates of “ Mount Magdala” and the GoH Shepherd Nuns placed over them will remember always, with lively gratitude, the benefactors of the institution. 6. Subscriptions may ho paid citner in part or in full, according *o the convenience of subscribers. 7. If, therefore, it was ever true to say “ That ho gNcs twice who gives quickly,’’ it is particularly so on the present occasion, in order that soon wo may see another House, of the Good Shepherd ad del to the 150 homes scattered over the Globe, in which more than 4000 Re.ligbuses bestow devoted care on 20,000 children and young girls, while a judicious channel wi.i bo found for the outlay of the funds entrusted to the Institution. 8. The Sisters of .the Good Sh-phor 1 will be g-ateful to ad those who encourage their friends to subscribe to the funds of the Mag dalen Asylum. The favour of an early response will enable me to bring to a speedy conclusion an institution from which circles of good must emanate to exercise a salutary influence cn the future of the Colony. Subscriptions will also he received by Messrs A. J. White and II H Lough nan, and by the Rev. Mother Prioress, Convent of the Good Shepherd, Manchester street North. Cheques and P. 9.
